Happy Tuesday Guys! Only 3 more sleeps until Friday! This week’s addition of Tegan’s Tuesday Tips I’m going to be expressing some little tips on how I don’t waste food that I buy. Being a student and on a budget, I hate throwing food away, It honestly makes me feel like I’m throwing away money, poof, gone! So I’ve found some ways to make my favorite foods last longer, Some are really simple ways and some of them would make me hit you if I found out that you guys weren’t doing these already! Nothing worse then having to throw away foods that you’ve brought without using them. If you are like me and you buy a lot of fresh produce or buy organic, then you know how expensive that can be! These tips help me weekly so I hope they help you guys too!
TIP ONE: USE AIR TIGHT CONTAINERS/SEAL CLIPS.
You Guys can laugh at me all you want for putting this tip in the post, but It is the most simple tip every, yet I go to my friend’s house and there cereals are stale, chips and crackers have no flavour, why? Because they’ve just left the packets open and not bothered to either seal them up or put them into a container. Yes I know, Air tight containers can get expensive and take up space, there are clips you can get that will keep your bags air tight and stop them from getting stale. I personally use both clips and containers. I Love sultanas and sultana bran, And 6 months ago I was throwing away bags of Sultana bran because the plastic bag it was in was unraveling in the pantry and my food was going stale. The best decision I made was to buy an air tight container to keep my cereal fresh! Honestly guys, such a simple thing but helps to much when it comes to saving money with food.
TIP TWO: FREEZE YOUR BANANAS.
I love Bananas. I have them with my oats, as a snack, in smoothies, but the damn things go off so quickly and I don’t know about you guys, but I hate bruised Bananas! I was averaging throwing 2-3 out every week, until I came across the best Idea ever! Cute your Bananas up as soon as you know they are not going to get eaten in time, Place them in a plastic container, and place them in the freezer. They are a perfect substitute for Ice cream in a smoothie! They give the perfect thick texture for a health blast smoothie in the morning or a snack at any time, you really can’t go wrong! They last for such a long time, and those of you who are calorie concerned like me, its so much healthier than using ice cream for your smoothies, great texture and keeps your drink super cold!
TIP 3- FROZEN BERRIES IN ICE!
Just like Bananas, I find that my berries can go off before I get to use them, and I always wondered how I could use them without throwing them out, I then came across a fitness page scrolling through Pinterest one day where a lady was chopping up fruits and putting them in ice cube tubs and freezing them! I had to try it! I had left over strawberries and raspberries in the fridge, I cut them up into smaller flakey pieces, and filled them up into my ice cubes tray, covered them in water and waited for them to freeze. One frozen place them into your water and taste how good it is! It gives such a nice fruity kick to water and makes having to drink at least 3 liters a day, more interesting! The trays take up hardly any room in the freezer as well which is a real added bonus.
TIP 4- MASON JARS ARE YOU FRIEND!
Store your fresh produce in mason jars! I always find myself cutting up fruits and vegetables and they brown to easily and quickly, Storing these produce in a mason jar helps the food last and leaves no jar staining like some plastic containers do. Mason Jars come in all sizes and shapes and help to keep your fridge looking super organised!
TIP 5: PAPER BAG YOUR MUSHROOMS, NOT PLASTIC BAG:
A plastic bag traps the moisture and causes the mushrooms to mildew! If you put them in a paper bag, which supermarkets often offer you when you buy mushrooms, this will help them last a lot longer! Place them either in the fridge, or in a cool dry place until you need them.
TIP 6: BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED:
This is one of the biggest ones. I often go to the shop unprepared and buy either too much of a product or not enough of another product, I suggest writing down a shopping list or a food diary, to plan exactly what you want to eat, or know exactly how much you are going to need for the week ahead. It’s the easiest way to save food and save money! If you are on a health kick like myself and try to eat as fresh as possible, it also helps you stay on your fitness and weight loss goals as well!
Plan before you shop! Don’t go to the supermarket hungry either, you end up buying a lot more food then you originally planned!
TIP 7: KEEP YOUR FRIDGE CLEAN:
If something in your fridge spoils, you will be able to smell it and it will leave behind mold that can find its way to other food. Clean your fridge out at least once a week or so and if you do have food that has gone bad, be sure to disinfect with bleach when you clean. Keeping a clean fridge will ensure that all of your food stays fresher longer, plus its so much more hygienic and presentable!
TIP 8: FREEZE YOUR GREEN ONIONS IN PLASTIC!
If you drink bottled water or even soft drinks in plastic bottles, save a few of them for storing green onions. Just cut the onions up and make sure that they are completely dry so that they do not get freeze burn. Pour them into the plastic bottle, date it and then freeze. This is a great space-saving way to keep green onions around for a while and when you need them, you just have to pour out the amount that you need and stick the rest back in the freezer.
Hope these tips help you guys as much as they help me! Honestly, I use them all, all the time and not only have they saved me money, but they’ve saved me so much time going back and forth to the shops for ingredients! My favorite one is definitely the Banana tip! Who doesn’t love a fresh Banana Smoothie!
Till Next time guys!
