Happy Saturday everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the start of the weekend, and if you are a Melbournian like me, the long weekend! It is no secret that I absolutely love going to the movies.. I mean, who doesn’t? The comfy seats, the big screen, the popcorn, the choctops! If you dont like the movies, you are lying to yourself! Ill admit, I definitely go way to often and spend way to much money on it, but im totally content and okay with that!
Last weekend, I booked in gold class to go see the new film ‘ Hail, Caesar!’ with my boyfriend for a late birthday present, and I thought i MUST do a review on the film. Why? so you all dont waste any of your money going to see this god awful film!
I know that seems harsh, I do- but the film was awful from start to finish. When I researched it before booking the tickets, I saw mixed reviews. Some critics loved it, some hated it – but then I saw a youtube review and this man gave the film 4/5 stars, so I thought, why not give it a chance.
Now, before I get into the review, I just have to say – the film will draw you in to wanting to see it, just because of the incredible acting cast that are in this film. And when I say incredible, I mean – Incredible! The film has George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Brolin, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton and the list go’s on and on! I gave it a chance for this reason. I love all the actors listed above so I was sure the film would be great.. but boy was I wrong. Okay – now I’ll explain why I disliked this film and why I think you all shouldn’t waste your money on seeing it.
To give you guys some background on the film, Its based in the early 1955’s and follows a man named Eddie Mannix, who is a busy worker trying to solve all the problems that the actors and film makers who work for him are creating at ‘Capitol Pictures’ When the studios biggest actor Baird Whitlock ( George Clooney ) gets kidnapped while filming the final scenes of his new film ‘Hail, Caesar’ the kidnappers ask for $100,000 to get their actor back! Eddie Manix needs to figure out a way to get the actor back and thats basically what the film focuses around. The Coen brothers directed this film, and you can definitely tell its their work – but not their best, thats for sure! I know I’m know film critic, but I cannot express how boring this movie truly was, and how the story line did not flow and how their had no true meaning to it, what so ever!
The film is a mix of Comedy and Mystery- I would have to disagree though, theres no comedy aspect at all, maybe my type of comedy is different, but i didn’t laugh once.
There were only a few little things that I liked about this film. I liked the actors in the film, thats a no brainer! Who doesn’t love George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum? I also loved the props and quality of this film. They really did capture the 1950’s perfectly, I will give them that. There was only one scene that interested me also- There’s this scene where Channing Tatum dances/sings, and its the cutest thing to watch and so entertaining! If you search ‘Channing Tatum – No Dames’ on youtube- you can check it out- but besides that.. theres absolutely nothing else I enjoyed about this film. Well done to Channing Tatum on his performance though, What a babe!
Well this list is definitely longer than what I liked about it. Dont get me wrong, I think the actors were incredible – It was more about the story line, the complete stupidity of the story line and how pointless the film was. The scenes weren’t filled like they should have been, there was nothing funny about the film and there were parts that left me and my partner wondering ‘ why the hell that happened’ and ‘ how that even fit in to the story at all’ The only thing that made the film bearable was the face that we were in Gold Class and in the city for the night so we could have a few beverages and forget about how crappy this film was. I knew where they were trying to go with the film.. but I dont think they captured it right. The scenes were not entertaining, the mystery was horrible and the point of the whole film was just lost- I highly recommend just waiting for it to come out on DVD and then make the decision for yourself. I also highly suggest you have a back up movie ready, because you most likely, if you’re like me, will not like it!
The film goes for 106 minutes. A very, very long 106 minutes if I do say so myself!
Now, I do feel bad only giving the film 1 out of 5, I do – BUT I just didn’t enjoy it at all.. The only thing that was great were the star cast and how well they captured the 50s.. everything else was not entertaining, silly to follow and had no purpose.
No I wouldn’t – I would watch Channing Tatum’s singing/dance scene again, a thousand times actually, But no, I wouldn’t even sit down at my own house and watch Hail, Caesar! again… ever.
To anyone who likes an exciting, good, solid storyline and when they go to see a comedy/mystery they actually laugh and find the mystery entertaining.. then NO i would not recommend this film. If you personally like to focus on the acting, the stars and the setting of the film, and focus more on aspects like that when you watch films, then maybe you should watch it and decide for yourself- but wait for it on DVD, It isn’t worth seeing on the big screen, thats for sure.
So there you have it guys, my review on ‘Hail, Caesar!’. I hope this helps you make the right decision to wait to see this film from home and not waste your money. Now, to end this negative review on a light note, A final gif of Channing Tatum dancing in the film!
Until next time,
